Lightning Protection (Simon Larter)

    Simon has worked in the lightning protection field since 1997, with stints as an installation technician, inspector, designer, project manager, and engineer. In addition to his Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, he is certified in lightning protection installation and design through the Lightning Protection Institute. He serves as a member of the NFPA 780 technical committee, and as committee chair, was responsible for the most recent update to the Canadian lightning protection code, CSA B72. He has been a continuing education presenter with the Lightning Safety Alliance since 2003.
Summary
Lightning is the most common force of nature most buildings are threatened by on a regular basis. The National Building Code requires that lightning protection be installed in compliance with the Canadian standard, CSA-B72, an understanding of which is crucial to ensuring quality systems. This presentation provides a brief review of the lightning phenomenon before examining the latest lightning protection standards in detail. It also highlights the requirements for certification in installations, and the knowledge and skills needed by installers. By the end, attendees will understand the basics about lightning and lightning protection systems in accordance with the new requirements, and will possess the resources necessary to find qualified personnel for field installations.

Lorne held the positions of Chief Evangelist and Chief People Officer with ATB Financial and was instrumental in advancing ATB’s culture, to where it became widely recognized as one of the top companies to work for in North America (In 2019 #1 Great Place to Work in Canada). Lorne has held executive positions driving culture and business transformation for a number of companies in the United States, including as an officer of a Fortune 50 company and as Vice President, Operations with the Los Angeles Kings. He has been the CEO of two privately held international companies, is a sought after thought leader, speaker, and cultural strategist. Lorne is a published author (The Character Triangle) and was awarded the 2018 Ivey School of Business/HRD Magazine Canadian Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to the Human Resource community and advancing the workplace in Canada. In 2020 the HRD Magazine included Lorne in their Global 100 list of top HR Leaders. Lorne was appointed to the FortisAlberta Board of Directors in February 2019. He is a member of the Institute of Corporate Directors and an invited mentor at The Unreasonable Group. Lorne has also been recognized in the World's Top 30 Culture Professionals for 2021 and 2022. Lorne holds a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Alberta and a Master of Science in Industrial and Labour Relations from the University of Oregon. He teaches courses on Culture and HR strategy at the U of Alberta EMBA program and at Harvard’s School of Extension. Summary
As a follow up to his Breakfast Keynote, Lorne Rubis, will outline a framework that guides the action required to build an extraordinary and highly adaptive culture. This is a working session that will involve group discussion to help make the session relevant to being a successful electrical contractor in Alberta.

    Linda has been with LEDVANCE, the maker of SYLVANIA general lighting in Canada for more than 20 years. She developed her passion for lighting the minute she stepped into her first lighting education class in September of 2001 at OSRAM SYLVANIA. She has been lighting certified by the NCQLP (National Council on Qualifications for the Lighting Professions) since 2013 and is a member of the IES. Linda has held several positions within LEDVANCE Ltd. and recently took on her latest challenge as the National Accounts/Business Development Manager for Canada in the summer of 2021.

    Mike is the Assistant Deputy Minister of Operations and Client Service Delivery with Alberta Advanced Education. He is accountable for Student Aid, Private Career Colleges, Foundational Learning, and Apprenticeship. He’s been with the Alberta Public Service for 23 years and prior to joining Advanced Education he has held leadership roles at Alberta Parks, Alberta Environment, and Alberta Energy.
Summary
In 2021, the Alberta Government passed the Skilled Trades and Apprenticeship Education Act. This Act fundamentally transforms the apprenticeship system, while still assuring that Alberta continues to produce high quality tradespeople. Join this session to learn more about the new Act, how Alberta is broadening the use of apprenticeship education, new pathways for industry to access apprenticeship education, the new Alberta Board of Skilled Trades, and how industry will continue to be closely involved in advancing apprenticeship in Alberta.

    Mark has been working in the fire and life safety industry for the past 12 years. He has had the pleasure of working with various industry stakeholders, Mark has provided training to fire departments, military personnel, engineers, maintenance teams and condo boards to name a few. From Mark: "I was introduced to fire protection after a career in the electrical field. I returned to school to obtain a diploma in Fire Systems Engineering Tech and never really looked back. I have been very passionate about helping educate technicians and other industry partners. I have had the pleasure of serving the CFAA Alberta Chapter as a board member and most recently as the President here in Alberta. I believe strongly that education is the key to ensuring that the places we all work, learn, play, and live remain safe."

Title: Lifecyle of a fire alarm system Turning over a compliant fire & life safety system to a building owner and end user begins at the design stage. The way we approach fire alarm projects cannot be a narrow view. Considering the building owners needs as well as the ongoing inspection, testing & maintenance requirements are as important as the device layout on the drawing. Understanding the lifecycle of a fire alarm system is key to driving successful and compliant projects that will deliver for clients long into the future. Being able to identify key pitfalls and problem areas will help to ensure your next project stays on track and most importantly meets the required codes and standards in Alberta.

    Director, Advancement & Social Enterprise, Canadian Mental Health Association, Alberta Division Kolbi is a proud Albertan living in a rural county outside of Edmonton with her four rescue dogs. She has spent her professional career in the not-for-profit sector, developing programs, managing projects and connecting individuals to the important work through strong communications and advocacy strategies. As the Director of Advancement & Social Enterprise for Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA), Alberta Division, she identifies province-wide opportunities and initiatives which build the potential for the improved mental health of all Albertans. In this role, she manages the workplace mental health initiatives and hopes to enhance workplace mental health in organizations throughout our diverse province. Kolbi is a strong advocate for mental health as a human right.
Summary
Join the CMHA AB for a high-level, basic introduction to workplace mental health. The presentation provides employers and employees with tools and resources for mental health awareness and responses to common mental health issues.
